Gratitude is holding, appreciating, thoughts of what you have

UNNECESSARY THOUGHTS

Become increasingly aware of unnecessary thoughts. Interrupt habitual
mental movements as often as possible during the day in order to examine
them. The very interruption allows clear judgment of the nature of passing
thoughts. It is like getting out of your car in order to inspect faulty
parts.

A profound awareness of how unnecessary thoughts subtract from us is enough
to end them. If you know the nature of salt water you do not pour it into a
fish bowl requiring fresh water. It is good to find our own examples of
useless ideas. One person might become conscious of maddening repetitions.
Another might see how he is dominated by the desire to be noticed.

Necessary thoughts are those which contribute in some way to psychological
health. Keep this in mind, then regularly dismiss all other kinds of
thoughts."

Aids to Inquiry

The best path to subside the activities of the mind -- which springs forth externally as the seer, the seeing and the object seen -- is to train the mind to see its own nature [in other words, to practice Self-attention].

From Daily Message for Transforming the Mind and Realizing the True Self from the Teachings of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi From the book The Garland of Guru's Sayings

Others are

"Others are as is our consciousness of them."

Correct Role of Memory

"The correct role of memory is to store up practical facts for daily
living. Unfortunately, we wrongly use memory to supply us with an
identity based on past experiences. Do not let memory tell you that
you are the same person at this instant that you were five minutes or
twenty years ago, for you are not the same person. Identity does not
continue from day to day, for time is an illusion. Buddha likened man's
true nature to the flame of a candle which renews itself every moment."

"How can we contact this purifying Higher Power? By lifting the veils
of illusion that hang between the human mind and Reality. By seeing
that the veils of the ego-self (thoughts) block the light.

By seeing this we penetrate into the innermost secret of human happiness, earthly and eternal."

Vernon Howard's Secrets of Life (From New Life Foundation), The Mystic Path to Cosmic Power, Chap. 8, p. 81
